Closing the gap is a good way for diagnosing weak spark. I've used that methid many times.

Those snap rings pop with a bit of lever force in the right place, as you've found out. It's a school day, every day.

Yeah, that piston looks like it's had very little work. Any piston in an air-cooled two-smoke will get some blow-by that marks the side of the piston. I've reused pistons with much much more colour down the sides.
